A Dream That Wasn't Real [ U N L O A D I N G ]
My piece "A Dream That Wasn't Real" performed during my senior recital at CSU East Bay on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Clark Bonafe, Blade Gui and Judith Cruces, violins Rejan Tse, viola Nicholas Carlson, double bass Janice Ortega and Lillian Yee, harps Adriano Tecson and Tom Dreiman, Madeleine Giordano, Erica Richstad, Malia Au, percussion Machiko Sakasai, piano Ginger Kan, celesta Melody Hall, flute Danielle Gaudry, conductor Program Notes: A Dream That Wasn’t Real was finished in 2013, however, it started in my second year of college in theory VI. We were studying minimalism. One morning, I woke up from somewhat of a loopy nightmare and the first thing I did was sit down and compose my theory homework. Thus, this piece was born.

The First Six [ U N L O A D I N G ]
CORRECTION: The end of the video says "Percival". The piece is called "The First Six". Please disregard. My piece "The First Six" performed during my senior recital at CSU East Bay on Saturday, May 24, 2014. International Low Brass Trio Jeff Dittmer, horn Gabe Cruz, trombone Jess Rodda, tuba Program Notes: My first commission. Guerrilla Composers Guild, a collective of composers in the Bay Area, was hosting a project with the International Low Brass Trio. I signed up and got accepted. That was the fun and easier part. The difficult part was that I, although was so ecstatic and overwhelmed by joy that I was on the team for this project, felt so anxious and concerned because I had next to no experience writing for low brass. At the time, I was obsessively listening to select bossanova music and music of Erik Satie so naturally I wanted to exercise those moods. I ended up writing a two movement bossanova-Satie inspired piece. The International Low Brass Trio performed it on the Guerrilla Composers Guild concert in the fall of 2013 and has brought it with them on tour through Canada during the winter of 2014.

Percival [U N L O A D I N G]
My piece "Percival" performed during my senior recital at CSU East Bay on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Ginger Kan and Daniel Highman, pianos Program Notes: Writing for two pianos has always been an interesting project idea for me. I grew up being very accustomed to piano being a solo instrument. Even in ensembles with piano, seldom would there be more than one. Therefore, in the case that there are two pianos playing at the same time especially if it's just the two without other instruments accompanying, it's as if the piano is talking to itself. In that sense, the piano is to me a very lonely instrument. With that in mind, I created a part for a second piano to communicate with the other. In a way, Percival is a piece about two extremely lonely and solitary people interacting and coming together. In being vulnerable with another person or ourselves, there is great joy and depth in such experiences that I wanted to express through this medium.

Crying Clown [ U N L O A D I N G ]
My piece "Crying Clown" performed during my senior recital at CSU East Bay on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Malia Au, clarinet Clark Bonafe, violin Austin Graham, cello Nayoung Jung, piano Program Notes: CRYING CLOWN was written specifically to workshop my skills as a student composer with a visiting Bay Area chamber group called Redshift, whom of which consists of clarinet, violin, cello and piano. I finished the piece in 2011 and fashioned the story and title around my insecurities as a student composer. Influences are pulled from tango, Ludwig van Beethoven, Erik Satie, and Danny Elfman. The workshops went extremely well and I grew tremendously because of this opportunity.
