Reviews

“The Trio for Horn, Tuba and Piano, Chorus of the Pleiades, by Lillian Yee (b. 1991) was given its world premiere at this concert. It is a meandering work of about 15 minutes which effortlessly moves from section to section and offers first tuba and then horn extended duets with the piano… The sections for horn and piano are very effective. Yee gives the horn a sentimental song that Black renders effectively before a peppier section emerges… The final section opens with the arresting, urgent minimalism of John Adams or Philip Glass, which the players perform with clarity. This section has many colors and at certain points you might think the players are chasing each other.”

"I enjoyed [her] use of contrapuntal writing to portray the interaction among the sisters. Nice touch of Brazilian classical music in the middle (à la Nazareth), and the harmonic colors reminded me of Ravel. I could observe how [she] distributed the roles among the three instruments, so that each has the moment to play the melody and then accompany, which reflects the egalitarian relationship among the sisters. Well done!"
